Homemade hub and pairing

I have a aeons lab gen 5 stick. What is the best way to pair Zwave devices to the hub that are far away? Is the only way to shut down the hub, move it, turn on hub, pair, shut down, move it back to it's "home" location and power up? Will there be anything special to do to get the neighbor devices to talk to each other?

No, you should always leave the hub where you intend to keep it. Assuming you have Z-Wave repeaters in between the hub and the device you're trying to link, it should build the routing profile automatically by using the Add Device feature in the Z-Wave settings of CastleOS.

If I put in a zwave light switch and pair it. But the next light switch is like 50 ft away from the first switch, will the first switch act like a repeater?

Yup! Usually anything not battery powered repeats. That said, 50ft should still be within range of the hub in most situations.
